The Study of Porcine Skin as the Biological Wound Dressing |

ABSTRACT |
As the biological wound dressing materials, commercial human skin originated from cadaver is mainly used in general. However in the case of products derived from human skin, supply is limited through donations. To the resolve such problems, we examined possibility of wound dressing derived from porcine skin to replace human skin-derived wound dressing. Porcine skins were procured using Padgett Electric Dermatome (IntegraTM) and manufacturing process was followed as human cadaver skin (Hans Biomed Procedures). In this study, structural, physical and biological properties of human skin and porcine skin were compared by scanning electron microscope (SEM), histological analysis, immunohistochemistry (IHC), tensile strength and GAGs assay. And a beagle dog was used in vivo experiment, induced (5×5) cm wounds and applied dressing materials from porcine skin derived products and control. In histological result, porcine skin is anatomically similar to human skin and showed the presence of collagen I, IV, VII, elastin, desmin etc. Also in the animal experiment, porcine skin-derived wound dressing (GPPS) group had epithelization, neovasculature than control group. These results indicate that biological wound dressing such as porcine skin has application of possibility and advantages. (J Korean Wound Management Soc 2010;6:62-68) |
