Wound research has been relatively slow to take off in Korea notwithstanding remarkable progress in other fields of medical research in the past 30-40 years. Collective academic study with specific focus on wounds only began in earnest in 2002. It was then that around 50 doctors, nurses, and researchers who came together as a group to share scholarly work and formed “Academic Association for Wound Management”. They had long understood the relevance of this field and had been treating patients and conducting research on their own. In 2005, the Association was evolved into “Korean Wound Management Society (KWMS)”, encouraging many other researchers interested in wound healing to join. Although Korea only began to recognize the importance of wound management in the early 2000s, fortunately sophisticated and related industries such as biotechnology and information technology with brilliant, industrious, and eager wound researchers have contributed to rapid development of wound healing studies. The KWMS has started issuing Journal of KWMS twice a year since 2005.

In 2016, the KWMS had two big events. The KWMS was officially accepted as an active member society by the “Korean Academy of Medical Sciences”. In addition, The KWMS was officially accepted as a cooperating society to the “Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons”. This means that papers published in the Journal of KWMS are recognized by the “Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons” in assessing the performance of plastic surgery residents and training hospitals. Recently, the KWMS decided to revise the Journal of KWMS to further enhance the academic quality of the journal.

As a member of the KWMS, I am very proud to publish in the first issue of the official journal of the KWMS with a new name and design: Journal of Wound Management and Research. This Journal will publish papers in March and September annually. Wound specialists from around the world are warmly invited to submit original articles, review articles, case reports, ideas, and innovations to this Journal. The Journal of Wound Management and Research accepts papers both in Korean and English language. It offers access to online manuscript submission for rapid peer-review and communication with authors.

I sincerely hope that the Journal of Wound Management and Research will be one of the world’s leading international journals covering all basic and clinical aspects of wound healing.
