Perineal Skin Care for Incontinence
Kyung Hee Park
Department of Nursing, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea
  Published online: 30 May 2012.
Perineal skin damage secondary to incontinence is painful, preventable, and occurs many in hospitalized adults. Perineal skin injury may rapidly progress to ulceration and bacterial and yeast infections that lead to discomfort and increased treatment costs. Fecal, urinary incontinence and loose stool are major risk factors in the development of pressure ulcers because they reduce the skin's tissue tolerance by increasing its permeability and decreasing resistance to friction. Additional problems associated with perineal skin damage include diminished quality of life, increased pain and costs. Therefore we should establish strategies for perineal skin care including prevention and treatment for perineal skin damage. (J Korean Wound Management Soc 2012;8:1-5)
